Job Description
The Staunton Public Defender is hiring for the position of part-time Secretary I. The Staunton Public Defender represents indigent persons charged with crimes in the Staunton region. The qualified candidate will provide administrative and clerical support to the criminal defense team of attorneys, investigators and sentencing advocate in the Public Defender's office. The part-time Secretary reports to the Staunton Public Defender and is employed at will. This position may include opportunity for future advancement.
Duties
Duties for the position include: 1) Occasionally greeting persons entering the Public Defender Office; 2) operating a multi-line telephone to answer, screen and forward calls and provide information to callers, take messages and schedule appointments; 3) Typing a variety of documents on a computer, including memos, letters and legal pleadings. 4) Maintaining a filing and record keeping system; 5) Data entry in a case-management system; 6) Mail related tasks such as collecting, sorting, distributing, and posting mail; 7) Communicating and interacting with Public Defender office colleagues, clients and judicial system personnel.
## Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: The qualified candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and work independently and/or with direction in a fast paced, team-driven environment. The ability to maintain a positive, respectful attitude with co-workers and clients under stressful circumstances is required. The position requires a working knowledge of office practice and procedures. The qualified candidate will have the ability to operate a multi-line telephone to answer, screen and forward calls. The qualified candidate will have the ability to create and edit letters, memos and legal documents on a computer. The qualified candidate must be able to follow instructions and pay attention to detail. Experience in use of computer software to include word processing, spreadsheet and database applications is needed. Experience with data entry is required. Regular, reliable attendance during scheduled work hours Monday to Friday is required.
## Preferred Qualifications
Immediate availability to work in the Staunton office. Prior experience providing administrative and clerical support in a criminal justice and/or legal environment is preferred. Demonstrated commitment to working with or serving the indigent population is preferred. Experience using Microsoft applications to include, Word and Excel. Ability to speak and understand basic Spanish is preferred. Flexibility to modify daily work hours subject to office needs.
## Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check, verification of employment history and reference verifications.
Being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment. The VIDC does not sponsor employment visas. Sponsors includes H-1B or any other employment-based immigration cases or visa statuses.
