Job Description
POSITION OPEN TO CURRENT VDOT EMPLOYEES ONLY.
This advertisement is recruiting a TO III Maintenance Crew Leader to be assigned to Check AHQ. This working crew leader serves as a team member and crew leader of work crews performing a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventative maintenance and manual labor tasks in order to maintain Virginia roadways. Participates in planning work schedules, assigning manpower, and organizing materials and equipment needed to accomplish assigned tasks. Determines and demonstrates proper work site protection techniques; ensures crew has proper PPE; trains crews in proper safety methods. Ensures accurate VaWAPM guidelines applied for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc., and takes corrective action when unsafe conditions are identified; provides traffic control in support of maintenance operations; and conducts on-the-job training and recommends additional training needs to Supervisor. Demonstrates considerable skill and expertise as an operator in the proper/safe use and maintenance of all equipment; applies specialized knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance techniques; monitors work activities in the field and maintains records of resources used for budget management and inventory control; ensures proper environmental protocols are followed; coordinates and performs snow and ice removal and other emergency response activities.
Position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

## Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction materials, practices and procedures; and of safety policies, procedures, and programs related to roadway construction and maintenance. Basic knowledge of inventory procedures. Skill in operating/maintaining light, medium and heavy equipment; and in the use of computers and software applications. Ability to direct and train the work of others; to perform manual labor and use hand/power tools; and to interpret/apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals. Ability to complete reports and keep records; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A within 6 months. Must have a valid DOT medical card and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. Flagging Certification required.
## Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated skill in performing a wide range of roadway/roadside maintenance work. Demonstrated skill in planning work to include estimating manpower, materials, and equipment needs. Demonstrated skill in coordinating and leading crews during emergency operations. Demonstrated ability to effectively direct and monitor the work of crew members and/or contractors and hired equipment. Demonstrated ability to effectively train others. Demonstrated skill in setting up work zones for stationary and mobile operations. Demonstrated ability to investigate and respond effectively to customer inquiries and issues. Demonstrated ability to perform basic administrative tasks such as tracking labor time, materials, and equipment. Emergency operations experience to include snow removal, storm damage and accident clean-up. DEQ Land Disturber Certification, Intermediate Work Zone Training Class, and CDL Class A preferred.
## Special Requirements
Will be required to obtain CDL A, successfully complete the Intermediate Work Zone Training course, and obtain the DEQ Land Disturber Certification within 6 months.
Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
Fingerprint based background check, references, work history and DMV records will be verified. Requires approved safety shoes.
